THE 2007
IMTERNATIONAL BLACK FILM & MEDIA CONFERENCE


EXPLORES THE IMPACT OF THEATER AND MEDIA RESPONSIBILY PHILADELPHIA, PA. - The highly anticipated 2007 International Black Film and Media Conference (IBFMC), slated forSeptember 7th and 8th, 2007 at the International House 3701 Chestnut Street in Philadelphia will have a dual theme:

LIFE IMITATING ART…WHAT IS OUR RESPONSIBILTY?

AND

EXPANDING OUR IMPACT.

Friday, September 7, 2007 (Theatrical Workshops)

3:30 pm – 4:30 pm

GENERAL SESSION:
LIFE IMITATING ART…WHAT IS OUR RESPONSIBILTY?
Why is it that so often the images we see in theater are generalized and stereotypical at best? Why is it so difficult for many of us to find our true selves, our true stories on the stage? In this candid panel discussion, we will explore the need for collaboration from the characters we develop and portray to producing works that tell OUR STORIES, while being mindful of the responsibilities in maintaining a positive image to our audience.

5:00 pm – 7:00 pm

Play_writer’s_Workshop: Noted author, producer, and writer for stage and screen Ed Shockley will share his knowledge through his book, Notes from a Practicing Writer: “The craft, career, and aesthetic of playwriting”.

Performers’_Workshop: Enjoy a lively session on creating and performing spoken word and live theater. Then learn how to make a living doing it with the multi-talented actress and performer Demetria Bailey.

Directors’_Workshop: Learn how to relate to & bring out the best in your performers and crew. Learn how to assemble, manage, and direct the production crew and pinpoint what position they are best suited for. Learn how to cast the right talent, run rehearsals, and motivate them to be stellar performers with renowned director Connie Norwood.

"Live and on Film"

See an impactful melding of talent as spoken word artists share their readings as film artists screen their fims.

“Slave Narratives Revisited”

See Ed Shockley’s interpretation “live and on stage” as performers reenact the writings of slaves and people who faced racial discrimination. Admission fee $25.00, for more information go to:

Reception: “The Voyage to England”
Want to be apart of history? Discover how you can co-sponsor the “Slave Narratives” performance in England. This is in conjunction with celebrating the 200th anniversary of England’s abolishing its involvement in the slave trade.

 

Saturday September 8th, 2007 (Film Workshops)

9:00 am – 10:00 am

GENERAL_SESSION: Expanding our impact. We discovered that finding our true selves and telling our true stories comes in many art forms. This panel discussion will explore the ways and means of producing works that impact lives as we meld spoken word and theater with film and video. We will also explore the preparation needed for the multi-million dollar motion production studio proposed for this region, and its impact on multi-cultural activities.

10:30 am -12:30 pm

Screenwriters’ Workshop: Story Development I& II: So you have an idea for a script? Or witnessed a real life situation that just BELONGS on the big screen? In this exhilarating class we explore the basics of pulling your idea together so it translates well on screen. You will fine-tune and organize your ideas and showcase the key elements of your story. Learn the process of rewriting without veering from the overall idea or disturbing the continuity of your project. Presented by screen writer Hasani Dubose.


Performers’_Workshop: Acting as a Business: Launching Your Career, but you’ve got bills! - This workshop introduces you into the business side of acting-contracts, budget, finding an agent, etc. So maximize your potential and limit the time you spend as a starving artist as we explore what it takes to launch your acting career.

Producers’/Directors’_Workshop: It’s all about business! Finding a great script the right script is the key. Explore how to find the script that matches up perfectly with your abilities and what you have to invest. Work on how to put together a comprehensive investment package that works to your advantage using “OPM” other people’s money. Presented by producers Peter Andrews, Rel Dowdell, and Shannon Newby

Screenwriters’_Workshop: Finish it up! Learn how to develop a financial plan to maximize the funding you will need. Learn how to shift the budget when necessary, without taking money away from vital parts of your production. Delivery is the key…Learn how to “shop your script”, and the pitching techniques of how to get people on board. It’s your vision; now help others see it! Presented by screen writers Hasani Dubose and Ed Shockley

Performers’_Workshop: So what’s my motivation? Different types of gigs. Here we explore the variety the field of acting has for you, as well as learn how to optimize your role by paying special attention to specific character attributes (type, age, etc).

Producer’s/Directors’_Workshop: Learn how to assemble & manage the production crew and cast the right talent. Pinpoint what position they are best suited for. Learn how to relate to & bring out the best in your team. Learn how to get what you need as you become more familiarized with the term ‘In Kind’ and “Bartering” so you may complete projects. Presented by producers Peter Andrews, Rel Dowdell, and Shannon Newby

4:00 pm – 6:00 pm

Screen_Writers’_Workshop: "Always Read The Fine Print" Contracts, Agreements, Clearances, and Intellectual Rights. Learn the basic terminology and fully understand what you are agreeing to and signing. Understand the laws of protecting your intellectual rights. Presented by entertainment attorneys Nicole Williams.

Performers’ Workshop: "The Audition Process "
Here, you will go through an actual audition, which will be taped. Your audition will be evaluated and you will receive a critique. See who “gets cast” and why. SPACE IS LIMITED.

Producers’/Directors’_Workshop: Selling Successful Indie Films: You’ve just wrapped your production…you don’t have to be mainstream for others to take notice. Discover different methods to get your film the maximum exposure Find out the tactics used by many experienced industry professionals to bring attention and interest to get your film seen far and wide! Learn self-distribution methods, promotion & publicity techniques that can generate exposure and revenue. Presented by Peter Andrews, Rel Dowdell, Shannon Newby, and Emilia Andrews.
